The Finance Minister is being accused of over inflating the cost of extending paid parental leave to 26 weeks.
A select committee has started hearing submissions on Labour MP Sue Moroney's members bill that would gradually increase it from the current 14 weeks.
She has urged the committee to look very carefully at all the costs and savings, because Bill English has threatened to use his special financial veto powers to shoot the bill down.
"I want the real figures to be debated and discussed, not some trumped up figures that the Minister of Finances has come up with in order to justify the use of a very extreme tool in a financial veto."
Mr English is playing down the issue but acknowledges there are difference of opinion as to costs.
"In the end it costs about $150 million per year, it's not our highest priority."
