Mike Hosking: Winston's right - we need the waka jumping bill

The Greens have had to suck it up and suck it up big time over the Waka Jumping bill.

A lot of people are upset about this and I’m not 100 per cent sure why.

I understand why in theory but I’m not sure why in reality.

Peters, this has been his way, and no one really knows why he’s so obsessed with it, but he insisted on it being part of the coaliation agreement.

It allowes party leaders to expel MPs out of the party and out of Parliament if they have serious and public disagreements with the party.

Go back to Alamein Kopu. She fell out with the Alliance, but because she fell out with the Alliance, she just got to sit in Parliament. She wasn’t elected to Parliament, she was elected on the Alliance list, but she got to sit in Parliament for free.

Brendan Horan is another case for New Zealand First, and I think that is probably what got up Winston Peters nose.

His basic argument - and you know what? I agree with it - is if you are elected under the umbrella of this particular organisation. If for whatever reason you cannot cope with that and you no longer want to be part of that organisation, you don’t get then to just sit in Parliament as an independent as you didn’t get elected that way and therefore you should get booted out.

That’s his argument, and I actually think it’s got some common sense. A lot of people disagree with me and Winston. Here I am, me and Winston together, like Brothers in Arms.

The Green Party vicifariously opposed to the thinking and logic, they hate it, but because of the coalition agreement they have to suck it up and they are going to vote for it.
