Mike Hosking: The wedding was royalty at its most brilliant

Britain had one of its best days possible on Saturday. A perfect spring day, a royal wedding, and a FA cup final.

Whether it was a billion or three billion people watching in the end, the simple truth was Great Britain was on show, and what a show it was.

Timed to precision, spectacular in its colour, pageantry and history, an extraordinary transatlantic mix accommodation of new and ancient. It was all you could ever have wanted or expected in an event of that magnitude.

She was beautiful, the dress even more so. He looked nervous.

The show was almost stolen by Michael Curry who gave a lesson in love that only an American evangelical can produce. I couldn’t work out whether the facial expressions of the royal family were of wonder at how good he was or with complete bewilderment that they’d never seen anything like it before.

But the contrasts of St Georges and all its scene and Bishop Curry giving it to them with both barrels was mesmerising.

You could not escape either that, in the church of hundreds and the crowds of thousands, that there were only two Markles, and one of them was the bridge. What must Doria have been thinking as she sat as the sole representative of the family?

Prince Philip was a highlight, his first appearance since his latest visit to medical, but he looked not just well but radiant with happiness. He looked like on the few royals who seems to genuinely like a good day out and a top event.

The event did what all great weddings are supposed to do, fill you with hope and remind you that love is what it’s all about

It seemed to wash away the previous week or so in which it seemed the day was in danger of being overshadowed by the lesser aspects of life.

The cheers from outside heard inside was magical. It was a day of sunshine, happiness and joy and that parade around Windsor was royalty at its most resplendent and brilliant and historic.

It was another day for a family whether you like them, love them, follow them, admire them or not, does it better, understands its roles better, puts on a show better than any monarchy in the world

It was a day for the senses, and every one of them was filled to overflowing.
