A criminal lawyer says the Parole Board almost has an obligation to get prisoners reintroduced back into the community.

Murderer George Trounson is set to be released on parole for the seventh time this month.

The Dunedin man was 17 years-old when he beat his flatmate to death.

Most of Trounson's recalls have been because of alcohol issues.

Criminal lawyer, Steve Cullen told Mike Hosking the Parole Board faces a lot of pressure.

"They are told that offenders must not be detained any longer than is consistent with the safety of the community. So if it is possible to release someone there is almost a movement in favour of doing so."
