The big plans for a small town

There are big plans for a small town south of Auckland.

Infrastructure New Zealand is putting up the idea of turning Paerata, just outside Pukekohe, into a satellite city for Auckland.

It says half a million people could be living there by the year 2050.

Infrastructure New Zealand chief Stephen Selwood said the development would be centred around the railway line, and houses could be built for $450,000.

"The land cost is lower. House supply for Auckland comes from the south. Most of the applicants needed to build the development come from the south," he said.

He said it would take time but much less time than building a new city somewhere else.

"That triangle from Pukekohe, Papakura, Karaka, was the cheapest but also the strategically easiest to develop."
