We're being told not to fret over a leaked tape revealing Donald Trump's trade strategy.

In the recording the US President says he plans to use food safety rules as a trade barrier.

Dairy, meat and wine make up $2.8 billion of our exports - causing some concern for New Zealand.

Trade consultant Charles Finny told Mike Hosking while it indicates Trump's attitude towards trade protectionism our exporters shouldn't jump the gun.

"But I stress this is something that was recorded before the president was the president. It's an interesting clue, and hopefully they won't go there."
