Bikies are being urged to take safe riding lessons - available for virtually nothing.

The motorcycle road toll is more than double what it was at this time last year with 23 people dying in the four months of 2018.

Institute of Advanced Motorists national president Carey Griffiths told Mike Hosking not enough people are taking up the ACC-subsidised Ride Forever programme.

"So there is no excuses not to get training for $50 you can have eight hours worth of training with an instructor."
