Experienced hunters are at a loss to explain how eating wild boar meat, could have caused a Putaruru family to fall gravely ill.

Shibu Kochummen, his wife Subi Babu and mother Alekutty Daniel are seriously ill in Waikato Hospital, after eating wild boar Mr Kochummen hunted.

All three are largely unresponsive and on life support machines.

Toxicology results are due back today to determine whether the animal was contaminated.

Hunter, Alan Simmons told Mike Hosking he's shot a lot of animals over a lot of years, and has never come across anything like it.

"I'm just wondering whether he actually harvested a dead pig, he actually found a dead pig that had died from some sort of poison."
