The worst of the fire may be over, but Christchurch is still in a state of emergency and firefighters are continuing to work around the clock.
About 300 firefighters are still monitoring the fire, and an Air Force C-130 Hercules will continue to distribute retardant.
Canterbury Civil Defence Controller John Mackie said officials are pleased with the progress they've been making on containing the fire.
But he told Larry Williams they will continue to run a 24-hour emergency response centre.
"All the resources that we had before will stay in place, and that effort will just continue over the days and weeks ahead."
The investigation into the blaze has now been handed to police, with fire investigators deeming it suspicious.
