This in response to the Commerce Commission's decision to knock back Sky's merger with Vodafone.
Business and Technology correspondent Paul Spain said overseas, a lot of sport is available direct from the provider and it's starting to happen here.
He told Rachel Smalley that means sporting organisations providing their own coverage and putting it online themselves.
"That's one of the big risks for Sky; is that content that has helped them hold people to ransom, suddenly they don't have anymore and suddenly they don't have that leverage with the market."
Spain said Sky has been well behind the game of technology for some years now.
He said the main reason it still has customers, is because it provides content that no one else does.
Spain said it needs to get with the times and provide all its content over the internet and apps instead of the traditional and expensive set top box.
