Warning to parents: School can't replace parenting

Teachers agree some social skills should be taught at school, but say they're not parents.

A study by Monash University and ASG Education Programmes has found 66 percent of Kiwi parents want teachers to play a greater role in teaching social and life skills to our children.

PPTA president Jack Boyle told Rachel Smalley there needs to be a balance.

"We are educators and part of that education is around social behaviour but more importantly it's on learning to learn and dispositional stuff."

He said that includes things like fitting in and finding areas of strength.

Boyle said the part of the curriculum that teaches those skills, is absolutely critical.

However, he said teachers are not parents, they're educators.

"There needs to be a balance and you cannot expect that anything that's not picked up by the parents is going to be delivered in a schooling setting."
