The World Flying Disc Federation are "honoured and humbled" at the decision from the International Olympic Committee to grant the organisation full recognition.Â
They govern the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, a popular sport among young people around the world.Â
62 countries are part of the WFDF, including New Zealand. It is widely played at schools and on University campuses, with regional and national representative teams as well.Â
At the most recent World Championships, New Zealand placed 9th out of 18 teams.Â
Points are scored by passing the disc to a team-mate within the end zone.Â
It's a rare sport, in that it doesn't require a referee to be played, even at a high level. Instead, players referee each other and award 'Spirit of the Game' points to the opposite team.
While the recognition from the IOC doesn't mean it will soon be an Olympic sport, it has been described by the WFDF as "an incredible milestone" that will give a "further boost to our efforts to increase the presence of Flying Disc sports in all countries and on all continents."
