The President's asking Congress to look into whether the Obama administration abused its powers.

There are claims the idea of the wire-tapping may have come from a far-right wing website - once run by one of Trump's top White House aids.

Breitbart News, previously run by Stephen Bannon, published a story on Friday claiming the Obama administration monitored Trump Tower during last year's presidential campaign.

The story was then picked up by talk show host Mark Levin , who says the evidence is overwhelming.

"How many of Trump's people were eavesdropped on. How many had their conversations intercepted, recorded, transcribed?"

Trump's press secretary Sean Spicer says it's to do with last year's election campaign.

He said there are troubling reports about what he calls politically motivated investigations, immediately before the election.

Correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking the Democrats are calling the claims ridiculous, and they're not the only ones.

"The anti-Trump New York tabloid the Daily News has a one word headline on the latest Trump outbursts. That headline reads: 'Nuts'."

But CNN's Ryan Nobles says the White House statement doesn't say as much as it could.

"Neither the White House, nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted. Now, while the statement is the first official response from the White House, it still leaves a lot of open questions. The most glaring being what are these reports about the politically motivated investigations? We're not specifically sure what Sean Spicer is talking about."

Mr Trump hasn't offered any evidence.
