UPDATED:  8.50am

Australian journalist Peter Greste and his Al Jazeera colleagues have been sentenced to three years in prison.

They had been convicted of "spreading false news" and have now received the sentence at a retrial in Cairo.

Greste said he is shocked, outraged, angry and upset by the verdict, and describes the three-year sentences as "so wrong".

Greste was deported to Australia earlier this year and was on trial again in absentia.  As such, he won't be serving anymore time.  His colleagues will, however.

Mr Greste is concerned for his colleagues.

"I know what they're going to have to go through," he explained.

"It sickens me to my stomach that these are innocent men that did absolutely nothing to justify this...," he went on.

Al Jazeera has now said it'll appeal the verdict, saying the sentencing is "grotesque", and an attack on press freedom.

Amal Clooney, the lawyer for the three journalists, is also calling on Egypt's president to intervene and grant a pardon.
