Ryan Fox has completed his maiden appearance at the US PGA Championship on a low note, diving 42 places in the final round in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Kiwi No.2 Fox carded eight bogeys and a double bogey in a seven-over 78, undoing the meritorious work of his two middle rounds which left him 12th with a round to play.

The European Tour-based professional shook off three early bogeys with a birdie on the sixth hole and an eagle on the par-five seventh.

However, Fox's trademark distance off the tee was spoiled by inaccuracy at the Quail Hollow course, including a tee-off into the water on the par-three 17th which cost two shots.

It completed a roller-coaster display by world No.101 Fox in his first major tournament on US soil.

His opening 75 was followed by a 66 - a round bettered by only two other golfers across the week - and a 71.

His closing round was the equal-worst by anyone on Sunday, leaving him on six- over, 14 shots behind winner Justin Thomas.

American Thomas won his first major title, with his closing 68 enough to leave Italian Francesco Molinario, American Patrick Reed and South African Louis Oosthuizen two shots adrift in a share of second.
