A decision by Australia to send more troops to Iraq may still be days away.
Our government has announced it will send 143 soldiers as part of a 400-strong joint Australia-NZ training team, subject to agreement from Canberra.
But Prime Minister Tony Abbott says cabinet has yet to discuss the increased deployment.
He also wants to have consultations with the opposition and his party room, which is not scheduled to meet until Tuesday. Mr Abbott will be in Auckland on Friday for talks with John Key.
