A wildfire raging for eight days near California's Big Sur coast has destroyed 41 homes and claimed one life.
The fire is threatening hundreds more homes and forced several state parks to close at the height of summer tourist season.
Officials say Mountainous terrain combined with extremely hot, dry weather have hampered firefighters' efforts to establish fire breaks through dense vegetation around the perimeter of the blaze.
