A sexual abuse prevention group says it's great to see Wellington sports venues addressing harassment in their statement of intents for the year.

Wellington City Council controlled organisations like the Basin Reserve Trust and Westpac Stadium say they will actively work to promote a safe and harassment-free environment for staff and attendees.

Sexual Abuse Prevention Network General Manager Fiona McNamara says sexual harassment often happens at sports venues and events - and is heightened if alcohol's involved.

She says it's good they're committing to preventing harassment.

"Seeing it in the statement of intent is really good because it means that it should be an ongoing process, so that it's not just a reactionary measure, and that hopefully, we will see an ongoing commitment to ending sexual abuse at those venues."

McNamara says it's good to see the commitment from these organisations at a high level.

But she says that on its own doesn't do anything.

"I would like to see them make sure that there is comprehensive training available to their staff and also looking at other initiatives that they can put in place, other opportunities to provide prevention messages."
