The hospitality industry says Wellington City Council would be double dipping rates if they decide to go ahead with an accommodation levy.
The Council's draft ten year plan is proposing a levy on hotels and motels in order to take tourism infrastructure costs off other rate payers.
Hospitality New Zealand spokesperson Rachael Shadbolt says it's unfair for commercial accommodation to be targeted.
"A downtown city levy already exits, so essentially if the targeted rate got put in over top of it that would be a double dip."
Ms Shadbolt thinks the proposed accommodation levy brings up issues around fairness and equity.
The plan says those who benefit the most from the tourism economy, should be contributing more to delivering new attractions.
"The commercial accommodation that ends up funding all the tourism activity which so many other businesses in the Wellington region will benefit from, yet don't contribute to," Ms Shadbolt said.
She says they're meeting with the council this afternoon to discuss the levy.Â
