Updated 12.15pm: Authentic World War One military vehicles are about to roll down Wellington's streets, as part of the commemorations for the 100-year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.

It includes Howitzer cannons, a tank, a London bus, and even horses.

Peter Baker, who is in charge of the animals, says it was difficult getting the horses' gear ready.

"It's not like going to your car and turning the key. From getting here there's about two hours involved of harnessing up, hitching up and dressing up."

He says the horses are well-used to big crowds and machinery.

"We had some of the horses at Wings over Wairarapa, so they weren't bothered about planes flying over. They've been exposed to gunfire."

The mint condition machinery comes from Sir Peter Jackson's collection of vintage vehicles.

The event's being organised by the city council as part of the capital's centenary commemorations ahead of tomorrow's ANZAC Day services.

The 2.8 kilometre parade will start at 12.30pm from the grounds of Parliament and end at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park.

A flyover of vintage war planes will conclude the event.

Project manager Dilys Grant says it's a chance to see very rare memorabilia from World War One.

"Vintage vehicles, trucks, various bits and pieces. Marching bands, pipe bands, there will be a six horse gun carriage leading the parade through the streets."

Roads including Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Wakefield Street and Taranaki Street will close between 10am and 4.30pm to allow for the event.

Surrounding streets may also be closed.

Dilys Grant says they have tried to reduce disruption as much as possible.

"The city will shut down for a few hours in the middle of the day but we are doing rolling road closures so as it passes through we will open it back up again."

All the vintage vehicles have come from the private collection of Sir Peter Jackson.

Wellington International Airport is advising passengers to allow extra time to make their flights today.

An airport spokesman says people flying out of Wellington today should allow extra travel time because traffic is expected to be disrupted.
