Labour is promising to build a light rail line to Auckland Airport within ten years if it wins next month's election.

Speaking at an event on Auckland's waterfront, Labour Party leader Jacinda Ardern said the party will build a Dominion Road light rail line from the CBD to Mt Roskill over the next four years.

It will extend the light rail to the airport within ten years, and eventually extend it to the North Shore.

That's three times faster than what the National government have proposed, saying they expect to build an airport link within 30 years.

Labour would also scale back the East-West Link road through Onehunga, and allow Auckland Council to introduce a regional fuel tax.

It would also invest more in electric trains, a freight rail line, and a new bus line from Howick to the Airport.
