National's Chris Bishop has grabbed the traditionally Labour seat of Hutt South.
Mr Bishop holds a more than 2000-vote lead over Labour newbie Ginny Andersen.
Hutt South had been held for more than two decades by veteran Trevor Mallard, who has now moved onto the Labour list.
