Families trying to start the school holidays with a trip away have been caught out by the flooding in the Coromandel.
Around 30 cars were caught out when State-Highway 25 was closed last night between Hikuai and Tairua.
NZME's reporter Belinda Feek says among them is the Parkin family who were travelling from Whanganui.
"Booked six nights in a bach at Hahei, all excited, got as far as the Pauanui turn-off and have spent the last 19 hours in their car. But, the kids were having fun."
State-Highway 25 between Tairua and Whitianga is now open, but drivers are being urged to take care.
There is still some minor flooding in the area and the wet weather has caused potholes and small slips, which the New Zealand Transport Agency is working to repair as soon as possible.
The rain has also caused the closure of two rural roads in the Gisborne area.
