Updated 12.06pm: A victory for Coromandel locals at the world-famous New Chum beach - developers have withdrawn their application to subdivide.

The otherwise untouched beach has no road access and can only be accessed without getting wet feet at low tide.

The group 'Preserve New Chum for Everyone' has been battling this proposed development for years.

The Greens say the developers pulled out of subdividing New Chums beach because it all got too much for them.

Thames-Coromandel District Council notified for public consent after a petition organised by 'Preserve New Chums for Everyone' and the Green Party was sent to the mayor.

MP Catherine Delahunty says the developers are aware that any development would be subject to enormous amounts of scrutiny and protests.

"As far as we know they pulled out because they are unable to agree amongst the three owning families how to develop the land."

The beach’s unspoiled beauty has been internationally recognised by National Geographic, Lonely Planet, and the UK’s Observer newspaper.
