Martin Guptill's ongoing hamstring problem means George Worker will open the batting alongside Colin Munro for the upcoming one-day series against the West Indies.

The first of three ODIs begins in Whangarei next Wednesday and the Black Caps revealed their squad plan on Tuesday.

Guptill's hamstring injury allows Worker, who has played four ODIs, to get his first opportunity at the top of the batting order.

Captain Kane Williamson will play the opening ODI, before missing the final two matches and opening in the following Twenty20 series as part of a planned rest. Tom Latham will captain in his stead.

Spinner Mitchell Santner, currently playing in the Hamilton Test, will miss the first ODI due to a shoulder injury.

Spinner Todd Astle, injured before the limited-overs series in India, returns to the squad.
Selector Gavin Larsen says Worker has earned his playing opportunity through a high volume of domestic one-day runs.

"Lockie (Ferguson) has been in excellent form and we got to see a bit of him in Wellington while he was a part of the Test squad. To have him and Adam Milne in the squad is exciting from a pace perspective."

Larsen said more new players would be introduced throughout the season.

"It's a long summer, so for those guys playing in all three formats it's important we keep them fresh and build depth leading into a world cup year."

Neil Broom and Santner will replace Williamson and Tim Southee after the Whangarei match for the two Christchurch matches.

NEW ZEALAND ODI SQUAD

Kane Williamson (capt - first ODI only), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Henry Nicholls, Tim Southee (first ODI only), Ross Taylor, George Worker.

Neil Broom and Mitchell Santner will come in for the second and third ODIs.
