Working out how to maximise New Zealand's kayaking medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is front of mind for the sport's head coach.

Lisa Carrington had a hand in all four medals New Zealand won at the world championships in the Czech Republic and would like to chase four Olympic medals.

"It's really tempting to want to be able to do all of the events, but realistically it is very challenging and there are other athletes that deserve an opportunity to be able to have a go at all the events as well", she said.

National coach Gordon Walker said that kind of workload is "probably a bit too much at an Olympic Games, so we really need to be strategic about how we choose those events for the different people and also how those athletes decide to focus on different events themselves."

Walker said spreading their talents will be difficult and a careful decision for them all.
