UPDATED 12.29pm: Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae is getting his final ceremonial farewell.

The steps at the front of Parliament has the red carpet rolled out for his last hurrah, as his term comes to an end.

A powhiri has been held on Parliament's forecourt, along with a 21 gun salute and an inspection of the Royal Guard of Honour, as Sir Jerry's five year term comes to a close.

His time in the role finishes at the end of the month and his successor, Dame Patsy Reddy, is due to take up the post.

However, Sir Jerry's time in the public eye is far from over with his set to be the next High Commissioner in London.

He's going out to rave reviews as the Queen's representative in New Zealand.

Chair of Monarchy New Zealand Sean Palmer believes Sir Jerry would rate as one of the best Governors-General we've had.

"He has helped to put the monarchy within reach of New Zealanders, and to bring many of the benefits that the monarchy brings to this country right here, and right in front of everyone."
