The idea of tethering politicians' pay to national averages is winning support across the political spectrum.
Prime Minister John Key has said he's open to the idea, saying some sort of change is needed.
Labour Party leader Andrew Little is also throwing his weight behind it, saying he's happy to sit down and discuss it with Mr Key.
"I'm sure I can use my union negotiating skills that used to be used to lift workers' wages, and used them to negotiate MPs' wages down."
Little says there's no question change is needed.
"The idea that MPs' salaries go up nine thousand dollars a year and minimum wage workers get a fifty cent an hour increase in the same week - this is ridiculous."
