The Housing Minister is laughing off calls for him to be sacked, saying a fix to record house prices is already underway.

Labour says Nick Smith should be fired, for the Government to start over and show it's serious about dealing with housing.

But Dr Smith said it's a meaningless political swipe from Labour.

"Andrew Little is dreaming. The housing programme that we have underway is seeing a record number of new houses being built. It is the core to the answer."

Prime Minister John Key said Nick Smith isn't going anywhere, as he has full confidence in his Minister.

"There's more people working in building and construction than ever before in New Zealand. Anyone who drives around Auckland and many other parts of New Zealand will see the enormous amount of building activity. All of that product is coming into the market."

Mr Key said he has confidence in Nick Smith, who will stay Housing Minister until at least the next election.

"Look we acknowledge there's pressure on the housing market. The Government's working very hard to address that but it isn't something you can change overnight. It's something you can change over a period of time and there's a lot of different steps to be taken to address that."
