Labour's Michael Wood took out the seat convincingly over National's Parmjeet Parmar, with 66 per cent of the vote compared to her 28 per cent.

He told Mike Hosking he's never taken an election for granted and he'll work hard every day.

Party leader Andrew Little said they have proven the party has good campaign techniques.

"When we stop and talk to New Zealanders, listen to them and talk about policies that are an answer to the problems they've got, then we can win, and so that gives us preparation for 2017."

He said this is a proven campaign technique that can win them the next election, and that listening and talking to people about policies that matter to them is the key.

"There are some issues that we know are important to the people of Mt Roskill," said Little.

"The issues that are housing affordability, rise in crime, transport issues, so everything that we could possibly do we did and I think we've seen the result."

Wood is off to Wellington today after romping home on Saturday.

Meanwhile, The Electoral Commission is looking into a number of possible breaches of electoral law during the Mt Roskill by-election.

Three complaints have been received so far - including one involving a protest which took place in the suburb on Saturday.

The commission's investigating whether the complaint on the protest should be referred on to police.

The spokesperson said it's important to understand that often people complain about things that are completely legal.
