A hikoi is hitting the road in Auckland today to raise awareness on the problem of sexual violence.
The group will walk 25 kilometres a day for 17 days, until they reach Cape Reinga, talking to people they meet on the way about the problem.
Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis organised the hikoi, and says raising awareness is half the battle.
"Most people don't ever want to talk about it and that's part of the reason that sexual violence is so prevalent, it just goes underground.
"People stay quiet and silence is the greatest enabler."
While the Te Tai Tokerau MP organised it, he admits he might not be properly prepared.
"I can admit I've bought a pair of walking shoes they're still in the box, so that gives people some extent to the amount of physical preparation I've put in."
