The Green Party thinks the people of Mt Albert are ready to be represented by a Green MP.

Julie Anne Genter last night announced she'd be standing in the electorate's February 25 by-election.

She'll be up against Labour's Jacinda Ardern for the seat that's been held by Labour since 1946.

Ms Genter said Labour's definitely the favourite to win the seat.

"But the Greens get an incredibly high party vote there. We get nearly a quarter of the party vote so I think there's a real hunger within that part of Auckland to hear positive green solutions."

Ms Genter said when she first moved to Auckland she lived in Mt Albert - and now she lives right near the electorate's border.

"I think what I have to offer is a particular expertise in transport, urban design, affordable housing. It's an issue I've spent my entire career working on and I know it's an that really important to people living in Mt Albert."
