The Government is being taken to task over what opponents are calling sub-standard health and safety reforms.

The criticism come as Parliament passes the second reading of the Government's health and safety legislation.

Opposition parties are on the warpath over the roles of workplace health and safety representatives being withdrawn from smaller businesses deemed as low risk.

Proposals under the legislation include removing the requirements to have health and safety representatives in smaller low-risk workplaces who employ fewer than 20 people.

Labour MP Iain lees-Galloway believes the Government has weakened the original Bill and has caved in to rampant fear mongering.

"The changes that have been made at select committee are based on misinformation and myth-making, which that government allowed to carry on out in the public," he said.

But Workplace Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse is standing by the change.

"The changes to worker participation balance the needs of workers and businesses. The bill will allow for innovative and flexible practices, while simplifying compliance for small business."
