After just a couple of weeks in Parliament, the Maori Party's new MP is set to take half of the party's helm.

Marama Fox is nominated unopposed to succeed Tariana Turia as female co-leader at the Maori Party's AGM this weekend.

Her step up has looked inevitable since the election but Ms Fox says she'll prove she deserves it.

"I want to make it very clear to our party membership that if they want me to be a co-leader that I'm there on my skills, that I'm there because I have the faith of the people and not because it's a done deal or a matter of course."
