UPDATED: 7.12PM The Judge in charge of the country's Youth Courts is to be the next Children's Commissioner.

Judge Andrew Becroft has been appointed to the post by Social Development Minister Anne Tolley today.

She's looking forward to working with him in his new role.

"I've worked closely with Andrew both in education and in Corrections and Police and I expect him to be tremendous help as we roll out this new child care and protection system."

He is set to take up the position in July, replacing incumbent Commissioner Dr Russel Wills.

As a result of the appointment Judge Becroft will be resigning as Principal Youth Court Judge.
