Wet weather on the way

Parts of the country will see a spattering of wet weather this weekend, and authorities are warning to drive to conditions.

John Law of MetService believes north-westerly winds are returning, bringing with them warmer temperatures and a few showers to western areas.

Law said Auckland will see cloud cover, followed by something a little wetter nearer the end of Queen's Birthday weekend.

"It should just about stay dry but we will find some wet weather arriving as we head through in to Sunday. Hopefully not until the end of the day, there should be some showers heading into Monday."

"It's not going to be as cold as we've seen the temperatures over the last few nights. We've seen those temperatures really dropping down below freezing. But with the return of those north westerly winds we'll find our nighttime temperatures slowly start to recover."

The sun will shine in the east of both islands though - and for the whole three days. Areas like the East Cape and Canterbury will command the best weather of the weekend.

Mike Noon from the AA is urging drivers to keep an eye out regardless.

On Queen’s Birthday weekend in 2013 there were no road deaths, but last year five people were killed in three fatal crashes.

"We have had Queen's Birthday weekends, 2013 is the one I'm thinking of, when nobody was killed and you really do hope this is a weekend when everyone can keep safe and we have no fatalities," Noon said.

"You need to be prepared if you're in an area where there may be frosts or black ice or if you're driving hill pass roads, drive those roads towards the middle of the day or the warmer parts of the day."

Noon said the first half of 2015 has not been a good one for road deaths, but if we all play our part we can turn things around for the rest of the year.
