West Coasters are being warned about cleaning up before talking to their insurer.

Ex-tropical Cyclone Fehi has left a path of chaos, including blocked highways, homes inundated by water, and wrecked properties.

The weather on the West Coast has calmed down considerably today.

Those cleaning up are advised to take thorough photos before they begin, or an assessor can visit.

The West Coast DHB says evacuees should ensure the electrical supply, water, gas and sewerage have been ticked off by the local inspectors before they're used again.
