Hospitality New Zealand is urging Sevens organisers to keep the event, and its family friendly approach, in Wellington.

Local branch president Jeremy Smith said hotels were near full, and while bars experienced a downturn from the event in the past, that's all part of the event trying to re-invent itself.

"There's [been] massive improvements made this year from last year and it's a work in progress that's why I think Wellington should retain the Sevens for a few more years because we need to build on the good stuff we did this year."

The Green Man pub manager Steve Drummond has noticed the positives from the different kind of crowd.

He said they weren't focused on alcohol quantity, but still spent up large.

"More food and higher quality sort of products so yeah it was a slightly higher spend per head than what we've had in the past."
