A plan to have 24-hour policing across the Eastern Waikato region could mean small communities lose their local police officer.

A number stations across the region are being assessed as part of a Rural Service Delivery Review.

Police Spokesman Andrew McAlley says they're carrying out a plan to have 24-hour policing across the region and will use existing resources.

He's tight lipped about what that might mean for officers stationed in small communities.

He says they're not looking to close any stations, but they could be used as patrol bases.

There are concerns crime at Waihi Beach could soar if the small community loses its two police officers.

Waihi Beach Community Board Chairman Allan Sole says removing their local police officers is an open invitation for crime.

"Come into Waihi Beach crims, rent a house and then plunder the rest."
