Tasman campgrounds tell Wicked Campers to cover up offensive signage

UPDATED 9.42AM The Tasman District could follow Queenstown's lead in changing their signage bylaws in the wake of the Wicked Camper saga.

Yesterday, a committee meeting found four Tasman campgrounds - Motueka, Pohara, Murchison and Collingwood - were telling campervan drivers to cover up any offensive messages.

All four are owned by the Tasman District Council, and three of them are leased to private companies.

Deputy mayor Tim King said the campgrounds have taken the issue into their own hands.

"They've undertaken on their own bat to require what they consider to be offensive signage to be covered up."

Mr King said the council would like a report done on an offensive signage bylaw similar to Queenstown.

"Queenstown already have something in their bylaws I understand that relates to offensive signage, not specifically about vans again but just in general, and because there's never been an issue we don't have a bylaw for it."

And it appears Wicked Campers may be flying the white flag over its offensive messages.

Tomorrow marks one month since the Queenstown Lakes District Council, announced it would fine any Wicked Camper vans showing an offensive message in its area.

So far there's only been one complaint, but no fines issued.

Council regulatory manager Lee Webster said he's spotted two vehicles in town, and one of them had spray paint over the offensive message.

"The second one had tape put over the offensive parts, an again I'm assuming that's potentially from the driver or from the vehicle owners again."

Anyone who sees a campervan with an offensive message is being urged to contact the council.
