War of words over Lyttelton strike

Updated 5.56pm: The Rail and Maritime Transport Union says Lyttelton Port Company has misunderstood their strike notices.

LPC has notified that it's services may be compromised from next Wednesday, because of strike notices issued for three consecutive days and the promise of another three notices after that.

But Union organiser John Kerr says the port has it wrong, and the workers are actually issuing a strike notice every day, with two weeks notice.

"It's a 24 hour strike that will commence on the 11th of February midday to midday on the 12th, then there's a 2nd 24 hour strike that will commence immediately after that and so on and so forth."

John Kerr says the misunderstanding could be solved if port CEO Peter Davie would pick up his phone.

Lyttelton Port Company is working with its customers to try and mitigate the affects of an impending strike.

The Rail and Maritime Transport Union strike action is scheduled to begin next Wednesday until further notice, following a pay dispute.

LPC CEO Peter Davie says staff are in the process of future planning, incase mediation discussions aren't successful.

"Already we're talking with our customers about how we might move cargo quickly in and out of the port, or use our storage facilities in Woolston to hold cargo."

Peter Davie believes the RMTU has inflamed the situation by misrepresenting his controversial pay rise.
