For the fourth year in a row the humble Honda Torneo has topped the list of the most frequently stolen car in the country.

Another small family car, the Mazda Familia, comes in second on the top ten stolen list compiled from claims to AA Insurance.

Customer Relations Manager Amelia Macandrew reports “it’s not that there are more Honda Torneos on the road than any other car, it’s the probability of them being stolen that’s far greater than any other car we insure.”

Macandrew points out those with newer models of car may have a security advantage.

“Newer models tend to have more sophisticated security systems that help prevent theft; however owners should not be complacent."

AA Insurance suggests owners of older models should consider installing an alarm, a steering lock, or considering a visible immobiliser.

The bulk of cars stolen are more than ten years old and have an average value of $5,120.
