The Education Ministry says sex allegations involving students at Opotiki College are very concerning.

Bay of Plenty Police are investigating and supporting affected students, their families and the school.

But, they say there's no indication to suggest the offending happened at the college or that it involves any school staff.

Ministry spokesperson Katrina Casey says they're working closely with Opotiki College and with police as they continue their inquiries.

She says the ministry is supporting the school's leadership team to minimise disruption to school life and help restore day-today-routines.

Newstalk ZB reporter Georgia Nelson was told by police that the inquiry is in its early stages, and that the police are working with the young people concerned, families, the school and other agencies.

Police say their priority is the well-being of young people who have provided information.

The ministry will also work with police are inquiries continue.

Anyone who has information or could be a victim is being urged to call 07 348 0099.
