UPDATED 12.33pm: Shape up or ship out is the message from the review panel that's been looking at the forestry sector's safety record.

The death of 32 forestry workers in six years has labelled it the most dangerous work place in New Zealand.

Chair of the Independent Forestry Safety Review panel George Adams says there needs to be a concentrated effort to reduce the numbers of serious injures and fatalities.

He says those that don't should consider exiting the industry.

The panel recommends a three-year-action plan that includes the development of a health and a safety charter.

Action plan revealed

A three-year-action plan to drive safety improvements in the forestry sector has been unveiled.

It includes the development of a health and a safety charter and the establishment of an advisory group.

He says on the panel's recommendations should create a more sustainable, professional and cost-effective industry - over time.
