There was a standing ovation as Richie McCaw won New Zealander of the Year last night.

The award was announced at a Gala Night at The Langham Hotel in Auckland.

Guests rose to their feet, before McCaw was draped in a traditional Maori cloak and presented with his award.

He said he was "very surprised, to be honest."

"I just play sport, and some of these people have done some pretty amazing things that can have a massive impact in different ways."

The former All Blacks captain said with that in mind it's very humbling to win.

"Pretty awesome to be honest, never expect it. There's some great people, great Kiwis sitting in the room."

Sexual violence campaigner Louise Nicholas and environmentalist Rob Fenwick were also nominated for the award.

Richie McCaw's parents and his fiance Gemma Flynn were on hand at last night's function, and Flynn was delighted.

"He's done really well, and I guess tonight is about celebrating all Kiwis, so it's great to be here."

Lydia Ko took out Young New Zealander of the Year - but couldn't be there to accept her award as she's playing in the Australian Women's Open.

The title of Senior New Zealander of the Year was won by Lower Hutt's Naenae School Principal, John Russell.

He was honoured for his work with kids from lower socio-economic, and multi-cultural backgrounds.

"It's just a matter of valuing everyone you know. Just making kids feel that they matter" said Russell.
