Auckland Council is considering every possible revenue source to keep rates down... even if that means renting out the urinal, the cubicle and the toilet sink.
Some former public toilets in central Auckland and Wellington have already been converted into bars and restaurants.
Now, Auckland Council is planning a tender process to rent out five heritage toilets to give them a new lease on life.
The council expects plenty of interest from businesses keen to refurbish toilets in prime locations.
But the heritage toilets in Kingsland and Sandringham could be harder to fill.
Rent-free periods could be used to entice businesses to set up shop in the unused public toilets, and to cover the cost of refurbishment.
The council has also reserved the right to leave the toilets unused.
The toilets being offered
- 18 Wellesley Street, CBD
- 464 New North Road (Kingsland Rail Station), Kingsland
- 12-14 Customs Street West (outside Galleria), CBD
- 598 Sandringham Road, Sandringham
- Corner Sturdee and Market Place, CBD
Toilets which have already been converted
- The old underground public toilets on Courtenay Place in Wellington are now a pizza outlet.
- The Attendant in London is a public toilet converted into a bar and restaurant, where urinals have converted into tables.
