An Auckland Prison guard is understood to have been stabbed during a gang-related attack by three inmates at Paremoremo Prison yesterday afternoon.
Corrections today confirmed that a staff member at the prison was injured when he was assaulted by three prisoners with improvised weapons in what appeared to be a gang-related incident.
The NZ Herald understands the attack took place around 2.30pm in the prison's B Block, and that all prisoners had been locked down in their cells until 8am today.
In a statement, prison director Andy Langley said the staff member had been treated and released from hospital and was being supported by management and staff.
The three prisoners were also taken to hospital and two have been treated and returned to the prison.
Police have been informed and were investigating.
Langley said the prison had a zero tolerance towards violence policy.
"No assault against staff or other prisoners will be tolerated in prison however, unfortunately from time to time this will occur," he said.
"Any prisoner who does use violence towards staff or fellow prisoners will be held to account."
