Anti-oil advocates will be banging together pots pans in central Wellington today to protest an energy company's expansion plans.

It follows revelations that New Zealand owned Nova Energy, a branch of Todd Corporation, has plans to build power plants in Waikato and Taranaki.

Oil Free Wellington organiser James Barber said the environmental effects of fracking are unacceptable.

"We're asking people to bring along pots and pans - there'll be chants, there'll be some music, all sorts of things to have a cheerful atmosphere."

Barber also promised a "strong atmosphere, to send a strong message to Todd Energy."

"What Todd Energy are doing is just one example of how the industry in this country is going in the completely wrong direction.

"Right now we need to be keeping fossil fuels in the ground, not looking for more."

Meanwhile Environment Minister Nick Smith touches down in Paris today, to chair the fourth yearly meeting of Environment Ministers from OECD countries.

Major issues up for debate include water, climate change, air pollution, and resource use.

Dr Smith said in the wake of the Paris Climate Agreement, many countries will be comparing notes on how to achieve their targets.

"There will be a lot of discussions around electric car technologies and how governments can maximise its uptake, things we need to do more broadly in the urban planning area, and particularly crucial for New Zealand is agricultural emissions."
