The Police Association says legislation may need to change, to allow police to deal with out-of-control parties.
Vice president Luke Shadbolt says social media has increased the tendency for people to lose control of a party.
He says it's a real problem, because the people who want these parties shut down, think police can go in and do that.
"It doesn't give us the powers to force people to leave the premises, or close the party down.
"We do have powers to deal with issues that are happening out on the street or property damage. We can certainly take some action with the individuals involved there."
