Updated 6:54am: A Hawke's Bay police officer's been hospitalised after being hit by a car at a breath-testing check point.
He has grazes and gashes to his legs, face and arms.
A car crossed the centre line and sped off just after midnight near the town of Clive - the vehicle was found crashed two kilometres down the road.
One person has been found, but police are looking for another who they think was the driver.
Inspector Tania Kura says the case won't deter police from setting up checkpoints.
"I haven't known of this to happen in this particular way and it is really unusual and it's quite frightening actually to think that these are things that we do everyday.
"People expect to be stopped at check points, especially at this time of the year."
The injured officer's name hasn't been released because his parents haven't been told yet.
